Summer School 2010

XVII International Summer School “Nicolás Cabrera”

FRONTIERS IN SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY

SELF-ORGANIZATION PATTERNS IN NATURE:
FROM MOLECULES TO HUMANS

13-16 Sept. 2010
APPLICATION DEADLINE: 15 July 2010

Goals:

Self-organization is a process in which the internal organization of a system increases in complexity without being regulated by an outside influence. The concept of self-organization is central to the description of biological systems, from the subcellular to the ecosystem level. In this summer school, leading research groups in self-organization will discuss self-organization in evolution, development, microorganisms, the brain, animal collectives and ecological systems.

This summer school should interest biologists with an interest in quantitative descriptions of biological phenomena, physicists, engineers and mathematicians.

Program:

Ecological networks

Decisions in groups

Collective motion

Self-organization of animal societies

Developmental patterns

Self-organization in the brain

Evolutionary aspects of social phenomena
